Scientific Discovery
In the 19th century impressionist painters were forced to react to photography as it became more popular and challenged their art. They were encouraged to be true to nature and to exploit aspects of painting that photography couldn’t achieve such as colour. Impressionists wanted to capture reality in a different way. Photography inspired artists to pursue other means of artistic expression.
